Attention Residents:  The Aston Police Department has received word of a potential scam taking place up and down the East Coast of the United States.  The potential scam that has been targeting the elderly community is in the form of a phone call from, “your chimney sweep.”  In some cases the caller did not state the name of their business but led the homeowner to believe that they in fact were the company they used in the past.  Recently the suburbs of Boston, Mass., were targeted and the individuals are possibly operating under the following names.

-          Aero Ventilation

-          Greenway Maintenance

-          Tri County Flue

-          Perfect Touch Maintenance

-          A&E

Things to know about Chimneys and Contracting work to help you avoid being scammed.

If the price for the service seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Be careful when someone uses photos to show you a problem.

Don’t accept broken debris as evidence of a needed repair.

Beware of scary language i.e. “an emergency” “a must fix.”

Require an Insurance certificate and a permit.

Chimney liners are almost NEVER installed the same day.

Utilize referrals from people you trust.

Beware of the ”Emergency discount”.

Make them show you what they are using.

Educate yourself before the serviceman arrives.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

The Aston Township Community Center on Concord Road is now being utilized as a food pantry collection depot that will help feed dozens of local families and children.

The Neighbors Helping Neighbors network has already recruited Giant, the Aston Police Department, the Penn-Delco School District, and other Aston organizations that want to help.

Non-perishable food items can be dropped off at the Community Center any day of the week during business hours. Community Center staff will securely store all donations.

All donated items (including gift cards, individual cans or cases of food) will be distributed to needy local families, as contributions allow in the coming months.

“The need has, unfortunately, been increasing, and our food bank is starting to dwindle,” Commissioners President Jim Stigale recently stated. “So if anyone wants to contribute non-perishable goods during business hours at the Community Center, it would be much appreciated.”

Snow removal and winter storms can be tough on everyone.  Please don’t forget your neighbors.  If you are able, make sure you offer them help.  Always check in on your elderly neighbors to make sure they are okay.  Cooperation and lending a helping hand go a long way in making a great community.

Richard D. Lehr

Township Manager and Secretary Richard D. Lehr, was honored as the 2012 Aston Business Association, Business person of the year.  Richard or “Dick” has been a long time resident and employee of Aston Township.  Dick has been a staple in the community and has been involved in various organizations throughout the years.  Dick received this award at the annual Business Association Dinner held on Monday, December 12, 2011.  The Business Association thought that this would be the best way to thank him for everything he does in the community. 

2011 Tree Lighting & Winter Fun Festival

The 2011 Tree Lighting was a huge success thanks to the extra efforts of the Citizen’s Advisory Committee and the donation of time and resources from local businesses and residents! This year’s event was expanded to include Free family friendly game and activities, snacks, and a visit from Santa. The Library also added to the fun by inviting Mr. Malcom to read The Polar Express.

Perhaps most significantly, the event was moved to a Friday evening, which organizers suspect encouraged a much greater turnout than in years past. Thanks to all who donated their time and resources to make this event so successful. We look forward the new Tree Lighting and Winter Fun Festival format to be used again in 2012!

Aston Police

Due to recent thefts from vehicles and homes, Aston police are advising residents to avoid keeping valuables in parked vehicles or to lock valuables in the trunk. The most common items stolen from vehicles are purses, wallets, and electronic equipment, like laptop computers and GPS units.

Break-ins have occurred both day and night, often targeting unlocked cars or homes.

As a precaution, residents should keep vehicle windows closed and doors locked, while the doors and windows of the house should be locked, as well.

Whenever possible, park vehicles in a well-lit area, and keep the outside of your home illuminated.

Residents should immediately report any suspicious persons and/or vehicles in their neighborhood by dialing 911.

Community Day

11th Annual Aston Township Community Day is scheduled for Saturday October 6, 2012

The 11th annual Aston Township/ABA Community Day celebration will be held at the Community Center on 3270 Concord Road on Saturday October 6, with a rain date of October 7.

Community Day kicks off at 11:00 AM with a parade which starts at Neumann University and proceeds down Concord Road.

The festivities continue until 4:00 PM where residents can enjoy a performance by the Neumann University Concert Chorale singers, the ABA Business Expo inside Rick Owsley Fieldhouse, and a silent auction of framed photos and prints, and a variety of outdoor rides, free food, games, and contests.
