With her daughter and grandson looking on, Aston Commissioner Jon Firlein presented Kathleen Keegan with a proclamation recognizing her 96th birthday
Aston Commissioners, during a recent meeting, presented township resident Kathleen Keegan with a proclamation marking the event of her 96th birthday.
Kathleen was born in Chester, attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Elementary School and Chester High School. She graduated in 1938 from the Chester Hospital School of Nursing and began her career at Chester Hospital.
Kathleen was one of the first nurses in the area to mix penicillin for patient’s use. She was a dedicated nurse, serving during the polio epidemic and possessed first hand knowledge of the iron lung.
In 1947, Kathleen married James A. Keegan and the couple raised seven daughters in the township.
Throughout her professional career, Kathleen worked at Taylor Hospital, Pennsylvania Military College, and was also a community nurse. She most enjoyed traveling to visit ill patients as well as teaching hygiene and health.
Kathleen was one of the first nurses hired when the Assisi House opened its doors and she dearly loved caring for the elderly Sisters at the facility.
She retired at the age of 80 and enjoyed spending her time at various senior citizen clubs.
