Earlier this year, Christiana Care announced that they were planning to build three neighborhood hospitals in the Philadelphia Suburbs. As such, I am pleased to announce that one of the neighborhood hospitals will be located right here in Aston Township. The hospital will be located at 700 North Turner Way which is directly across Dutton Mill Road from the IceWorks skating facility. The current building there will be demolished, and a new two-story building will be constructed on the same site.  A micro-hospital is a small, licensed healthcare facility that provides a range of medical services to a local community. Micro-hospitals are designed to meet the needs of lower-acuity patients and are often located in underserved areas. They are typically smaller than traditional hospitals and offer services at a lower cost.

Neighborhood hospitals are also known as Micro-Hospitals, designed for patients who are not seriously ill while filling coverage gaps in areas that can’t support full-scale hospitals. Here are some characteristics of micro-hospitals:

  • Size: Micro-hospitals are usually between 15,000 and 25,000 square feet but can be larger. They are often located in two to three-story buildings.
  • Services: Micro-hospitals offer a range of services, including emergency services, inpatient pharmacy and lab, imaging, dietary services, and primary care.
  • Inpatient beds: Micro-hospitals typically have between eight and 10 inpatient beds. This hospital will also have 10 emergency beds.
  • Cost: Micro-hospitals are generally cheaper than full-service hospitals because they are not as large and are not set up to treat everything.
  • Hours: Micro-hospitals are run 24/7, all year long.

There will be a Conditional Use Hearing in the very near future at a date and time to be determined. Likewise, the applicant, Christiana Care Pennsylvania will appear in front of the Aston Township Planning Commission and the New Construction Committee on a date and time in the future at the Township Administrative offices, 2 new Road, Aston, PA 19014. (The New Road bridge in now open to access the Township parking lot.) The public is invited to attend all three meetings and make comment.
