Aston Commissioners, during the July 15 meeting, presented a proclamation to longtime resident Joseph Owsley, Jr. on the event of his 90th birthday, which he will celebrate on August 22.
Joe moved to Aston with his family in 1955, where he and his wife Mabel resided on Seward Lane for more than 60 years. They raised their seven children in the township, and six continue to live in the Aston.
Their son Rick, for whom the field house at the Aston Community Center is named, died several years ago.
Joe was a basketball coach for the Aston AA organization, loved to play softball, enjoyed a good game of golf, and was an avid bowler.
He was a member of the Green Ridge Fire Company when it was housed at Dutton Mill and Chrystal Roads. He ans Mabel attended Mount Hope United Methodist Church.
Joe and Mable are the grandparents of 15 and great grandparents of 15.
“This gives me great honor to read this proclamation to a gentleman that I knew when he was called The Colonel,” said 5th ward Commissioner Jim McGinn. “At one time when I decided to run for commissioner, his family had nine votes and his son Ricky was good friends with the Feeley family, who had another eight votes. So, I was up a lot right from the beginning.”
Owsley was on-hand at the meeting with his children, grandchildren and many other family members.
